Etymology

Etymology is the study of the historical development of the meaning of words. Certain theoretical paradigms argue that words gradually move away from their original, genuine and correct meaning, towards a more superficial and fabricated form. It is certainly a fact that we all use words everyday without thinking very much about their actual meaning.


As an example, consider the following:


Humans are able to understand: a statement, a piece of music, traffic regulations, etc. But exactly where do we stand when we understand? The word in fact originates from the Germanic verstehen, altered into Old English as forstanden.
